£52m solar power deal announced

Surface Power, a manufacturer of innovative proprietary solar thermal systems for domestic and commercial rooftops, today announced a new £52m multi-year Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) framework agreement with UK solar integrator, Solar Fusion.

The RHI commences in July and will create not only jobs, but also a new era for solar technology in the UK.

Surface Power’s cylindrical solar hot water systems are designed to generate more heat on an annual basis from buildings which do not need to face south, whilst providing much lower installation costs than conventional solar panel technologies.

The company claims that its water technology is up to 10 times more efficient than standard solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. With lower set-up costs, higher energy production, and payments from the government for every kilowatt hour produced, this could potentially give users free energy in both their home and business.

John Quinn, CEO and founder of London-based Surface Power, said: “They are a highly innovative UK integrator of small, medium and large-scale commercial solar thermal systems. Their strong national presence in UK, coupled with our advanced solar hot water systems, will accelerate the deployment of world-class RHI installations on domestic and commercial rooftops in the UK.”

Michael Byrne, CEO of Solar Fusion, commented: “As a company focused on cost, performance and reliability, we are very happy to announce this partnership. As a leading solar hot thermal integration company, it’s important that we secure access to the most powerful solar thermal technology in advance of the RHI.

“High performance per m2 equals the highest RHI tariff paid per year by the government, and Surface Power’s technology sets a new standard of performance on rooftops compared to conventional solar hot water technologies in terms of installation cost, rooftop loading, non-penetrating wind performance, and energy production per roof.”

Kevin Edge, technical director of Solar Fusion, added: “Surface Power’s innovative Thermal Power Point Tracking technology (TPPT) and fast and easy mounting systems are leading the way toward a clean energy future. Solar Fusion has placed itself in a leading position in the UK market for RHI due to securing this supply chain for our customers, especially housing associations, hotels, nursing homes or larger RHI investors.”
